Hakone Lake, also known as Lake Ashi (芦ノ湖, Ashinoko), in the Hakone area of Kanagawa Prefecture as it looked in 1932 (Showa 7).
Ashinoko is a crater lake surrounded by volcanic mountains and offers beautiful views of Mt. Fuji.
Because of its beautiful scenic views, numerous hot springs and its convenient as well as strategic location on the Tokaido, the main link between Edo (today’s Tokyo) and Kyoto, the area has been a popular resting spot for many centuries. Even today, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Japan.
This glass slide is one of a series of slides of Japan that was used by the New York State Education Department to teach students about Japan.
