View on the city of Kyoto and the Nishiyama Mountain Range as seen from a viewing platform (展望台) at the Yoshimizu Hot Spring (吉水温泉) at Higashiyama.

The path leads to Yasaka Jinja. On this image it does not yet have the electricity poles that would line it later. The scaffolding on the large building along the path suggests that it is under construction or undergoing maintenance (see detailed image below).

The green area in the middle of this photograph would in 1886 (Meiji 19) become Maruyama Park. The building from which this photo was taken, burned down in 1906 (Meiji 39).

Old Photos of Japan aims to be your personal museum for Japan's visual heritage and to bring the experiences of everyday life in old Japan to you.

To enhance our understanding of Japanese culture and society I track down, acquire, archive, and research images of everyday life, and give them context.

I share what I have found for free on this site, without ads or selling your data.

Your support helps me to continue doing so, and ensures that this exceptional visual heritage will not be lost and forgotten.

Ginza Streetcar

A wonderfully relaxed Ginza, full of empty space, with magnificent willow trees, a simple sandy road and a horse-drawn street car. It can hardly be any more different from the Ginza that we know today.

A beautiful and extremely rare—I haven’t seen this photo anywhere else yet—panoramic view of Osaka from the Osaka Prefectural Office, looking towards the North East.

Tokyo 1880s
Shinagawa Station

This photo makes you look at the title in utter disbelief. But Shinagawa Station did actually look this rural, with the waves of Tokyo Bay reaching to the very edge of the station.
